Question
I'm in general chemistry 2, but we seem to be going intoorganic chem. Anyow, I've been asked: If 1.02 grams of acetylsalicylic acid was obtained from 1.00grams of salicylic acid by reaction with excess acetic anhydride, what is the precentage yeild of the reaction? I have no idea what any of these things are, we are no wherenear this stuff in class and i don't no why we've been askedthis question for a pre-lab. Moles of acetylsalicylic acid = mass/ molar mass =1.02 g / 180.16 g/mol =0.0057 moles . Moles of salicylic acid = 1.00 g / 138.12 g/mol = 0.0072 moles . Since acetic anhydride is in excess, one mole of salicylicacid should give one mole of acetyl salicylic acid. Or for 0.0072 moles of salicylic acid, we should get 0.0072moles of acetylsalicylic acid But we have got less that 100 % percent yield. So percent yield = ( moles of acetylsalicylic acid obtained /moles expected) * 100 =( 0.0057 moles / 0.0072 moles) * 100 = 79.2 %Related Questions
