Question

Acidic oxides such as carbon dioxide react with basic oxideslike calcium oxide (CaO) and barium oxide (BaO) to form salts(metal carbonates). a) Write equations representing these tow reactions b) A student placed a mixture of BaO and CaO of combined mass4.88 g in a 1.46 L flask containing carbon dioxide gas at 35degrees Celcius and 746 mmHg. Calculate the percentcomposition by mass of the mixture. Assume volumes of the solidsare negligible.

Explanation / Answer

a.) CaO+CO2--->CaCO3
BaO +CO2 --->BaCO3
b) By using the gas law PV=nRT

the initial moles of CO2 is 0.0567. Final moles of CO2 is0.0192
moles of CO2 consumed are 0.0375
CaO & BaO react in a 1:1 ratio with CO2
let the moles of CaO & BaO be x & y respectively.
then forming an equation

x + y =0.0375          --------------------------(1)

mol. wt. of CaO is 56 & of BaO is 153.Total mass of mixture is4.88 g.Thus writing equation for mass

56x + 153y =4.88             -------------------(2)

Solving the equation simultaneously,
x = no. of moles of CaO = 0.0088
y = no. of moles of BaO = 0.0287

wt. of CaO = 56x = 0.4928 g
wt. of BaO = 153 y = 4.3911 g

% CaO = 10.09 %
% BaO = 89.91 %
