Question

Three commin lab experiments are shown. In each case, describehow the IR spectrum of the product would differ from that of thereactant. Give approximate frequencies for distinctive peaks in theIR spectrun of the reactant and also the product. pinacol--pinacolone cinnamaldehyde--cinnamyl alcohol salicylic acid--methyl salicylate Three commin lab experiments are shown. In each case, describehow the IR spectrum of the product would differ from that of thereactant. Give approximate frequencies for distinctive peaks in theIR spectrun of the reactant and also the product. pinacol--pinacolone cinnamaldehyde--cinnamyl alcohol salicylic acid--methyl salicylate

Explanation / Answer

A)    Pinacol would show a broad, intensepeak ~3300 for the OH group. Whereas Pinacolone would show an intense peak ~1700 for theC=O group B) Cinnamaldehyde would show an intense peak ~1700 for theC=O, two peaks around 2750 and 2800 for the C-H bond in thealdehyde, and finally a peak around ~1650 for the C=C doublebond. Whereas Cinnamyl alcohol will show all the above, but the~1700 peak will be absent. Instead there will be a broad peak ~3300for the OH group. C) Salicylic acid will show a very broad, intense peakaround ~3300 for the COOH group (the broad peak of the OH group maybe visible, but could be obscured by the COOH peak). A peak at~1650 for the aromatic ring (which has C=C double bonds). There arealso peaks that distinguish the structure as ortho-disubstituted,but they occur within the fingerprint region. Methyl salicylate will show a broad peak ~3300 for the OHgroup, ~1700 for the C=O group, and ~1650 for the aromaticring.
