Question

Suppose the strategic Petroleum Reserve of a country is 6.20E8barrels of oil. The oil consumption rate of that country is 9.5E8m^3/year. There are 6.29 barrels/m^3. At the given consumptionrate, how many days would it take to consume the reserve?

I started off by dividing the # of barrels total by the # ofbarrels/m^3 and got 9.856916E7 barrels/m^3. I then divided that by3467.5E8 m^3/day (I got by dividing the consumption rate by thenumber of days in a year). I ended up with 2.84E2 m^3/day. Thesystem still days that this answer is wrong. Can you tell me what Ineed to do differently?

Explanation / Answer

Total oil stock = 6.2 * 10^8 barrels The consumption of the oil in 1 year = 9.5 * 10^8m^3                                                       = 9.5 * 10^8 *6.29Barrels          (Since 1 Cubic Meter = 6.29 Barrels)                                                       = 59.755* 10^8Barrels For 1 year the oil consumption is 59.755 * 10^8 Barrels i.e., for 365 days the oil consumption is 59.755 * 10^8 Barrels For 1 day the oil consumption is X Barrels X = 59.755 * 10^8 / 365    = 0.1637 * 10^8 barrels for 1 day So the oil used for ( Total oil stock / the oil consumptionfor a day )                           = 6.2 * 10^8 barrels / 0.1637 * 10^8 barrels                           = 37.87 days                           ~ 38 days
