Question

Calculate the ATP yield for the complete oxidation of a 21-carbon saturated fatty acid (You should consider the B-oxidation steps, processing of acetyl-CoA through the citric acid cycle, and electron transport Production of one GTP should be considered the equivalent of production of one ATP. Explanation / Answer

Calculation of ATP yield for the oxidation of 21-carbon saturated fatty acid

activation of fatty acid = -2 ATP

number of beta-oxidation cycles = (21/2) - 1.5 = 9

ATP yield per cycle = 9 x 5ATP/round = 45 ATP

number of acetyl units = 9

9 acetyl CoA x 12 ATP/acetyl CoA = 108 ATP

propionyl CoA to succinyl CoA = -1 ATP

succinyl CoA to malate = 3 ATP

malate to pyruvate (NADPH) then to acetyl CoA = 3 ATP

acetyl CoA oxidation in Krebs cycle = 12 ATP

total ATP yield = -2 + 45 + 108 - 1 + 3 + 3 + 12 = 168 ATP

So 168 ATPs are gained for each 21-carbon fatty acid oxidized
