Question
From observation of ionic compounds, what is the main difference between group metal ions and transition metal ions? (2) 5. ination of empirical formula of an unknown hydrate: An experiment similar to what we used to la of a hydrate of iron oxide. The following data were obtained. Fill the missing data and determine the empirical formula of a hydrate of copper chloride was carried out to determine the empirical the empirical formula of iron oxide hydrate. (1.5 each for a-c) Mass of crucible 14.317 g 16.633 g Mass of crucible + hydrated iron oxide Mass of hydrated iron oxide Mass of crucible + dehydrated iron oxide a.316 15.913 g Mass of water in the hydrate b. Mass of iron 1.112 g Mass of oxygen e 043 C. d. The empirical formula is: eh0 Show calculation of empirical formula: (2.5) 1.0 o199 ll0 01001 00-1512-3 o-olaExplanation / Answer
6. Mass of H2O = 0.720 g
moles H2O = 0.720/18 = 0.04 mol
mass of Fe = 1.112 g
moles Fe = 1.112/55.85 = 0.02 mol
mass of O = 0.484 g
moles O = 0.484/16 = 0.03 mol
empirical formula = Fe2O3.4H2O
a. If not all the water has been evaported, the mass of Fe calculated would be higher, therefore, the empirical formula would have higher Fe content and much lower H2O content.
b. The amount of H2O present in the empirical formula is dependent on the accuracy of the method.
Acid -base titration
8. If NaOH is titrated with HCl, HC2H3O2 and H2SO4
a. Both HCl and HC2H3O2 are monoprotic acids, thus the maximum acid consumed to reach end point would be HCl and HC2H3O2.
b. If standard HCl is used as titrant for NaOH. The initial color of solution would be pink with phenolphthalein indicator and it turns coloress at the end point due to acidic solution.
