Question

A student cannot find a regulator (the device that controls the output pressure on a gas cylinder). They decide to try to get away without it since they found a fairly small 3.00L gas cylinder. They hook up a tube to the gas cylinder and attach the other tube to a sealed reaction flask with a volume of 1.00L When they open the tank, their flask explodes If the tank had a pressure of 156 atm, what pressure would the flask have needed to be able to withstand so as not to explode when the valve between the tank and the flask is open. Assume no temperature change and assume the hose has a negligible volume in relation to the tank and the flask.

Explanation / Answer

The gas would have flown into flask untill pressure would have become equal.

At that point P1V1=P2V2

Or P2/P1=V1/V2

156/P=3/1

P=52 ATM would the flask have needed to withstand.
