Question
115 1. Would you expect the substance hexyl amine, CH(CHCH NH, to be miscible with water? Use data from this lab to support your conclusion. 2. What substance could be added to hexyl amine so that a chemical reaction would occur to increase the solubility of hexyl amine in water? Why is the product of your chemical reaction more soluble in water? Write the chemical equation. (hint: chapter 20 contains information about reactions of amines) 3. Draw the structure of MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether). Which would you expect to be more uble in water, MTBE or other components of gasoline such as iso-octane and benzene? Explain your answer using chemical terms that a chem 201A student could understand, and use data from this lab to support your conclusion.Explanation / Answer
Q1.
hexyl amine has NH2 gruop which is polar, and can form Hydrogen bonding between water and itself, therefore, expect solubility in water.
Note that this is not "that soluble" since it has a long carbon chain, therefore, the effect of intermoelcular fores are not that strong, therefore, will not be that soluble in water
Q2
we could add H+ in order to favour the
NH2 + H+ = NH3+ protonation, which is much mor esoluble in water, due to its ionic nature.
Q3
MTBE is not likely to be soluble in water, since it is very nonpolar, it will be polar with gasoline, which is nonpolar as well.
Even thouhg it ocntians an oxygen, this will not be enough since it is an ether, the polarity is lost in the amount of carbon presnet.
