When we go smaller distances the nuclear force between the nucleons is extremely strong.
The binding operation is done by the protons which will bind to the neutrons and keep the nucleus intact.
If we see the graph between number of protons vs number of protons among different isotopes then we would observe that the nuclei are stable when the ratio of neutron/proton is in the range 1:1 and 1.5:1
Therefore when the size of the nucleus increases then the electrostatic repulsion by the protons gets diminished.This is why we cant add extra neutrons beyond a certain size.
