I disagree with both the arguments, reason being we can not deny the importance of any of these two fields in a chemical company. Knowledge of both are equally important.

thermodynamics-

thermodynamics mostly deals with macroscopic systems. its importance can not be denied in working of any machine in chemical company. thermodynamic ignorance for a second can lead to devastating impacts which may last for years. such as the case of nuclear power plants.

quantum chemistry-

it mostly deals with microscopic systems and its importance can not be denied in places such as chemical reactors where reaction between different materials is taking place. even optical rotation of a compound can be a significant factor. while one enantiomer can be useful to us other can even act as a poison and take lives.
