Question
4. You are an ecologist studying the recovery of California condors in the area around
the Grand Canyon. You want to conduct a survey to determine the current
population size. You catch 7 condors, tag them, and release them. Two months later,
you catch 10 condors. Only 1 condor of your second catch is tagged. What is your
estimate of the condor population?
5. Raccoons have rings around their tails which usually end in a blunt tip. Suppose that
both these unlinked traits are controlled via incomplete dominance so that wide
bands on the tail are BB, medium sized bands are Bb, and narrow bands are bb and
that the blunt tails are WW, semi-blunted tails are Ww, and pointed tails are ww. If
two raccoons mated, both with medium sized banded tails that were semi-blunted,
how many of the progeny (assume a clutch size of 16) would have wide bands and
semi-blunted tails?
Explanation / Answer
In the second catch after two months, only 1 condor is tagged out of 10, i.e. 1 in 10 or 0.1. The proportion of condors that are captured with tag is equal to the proportion of total tagged condors in the whole population.
In the first catch, 7 condors were tagged. Thus,
7 condors/ Total condors in the population (X) = 1 condor captured with tag/ Total condors captured (10)
èX = 7*10 = 70
Total number of condor population = 70.
