Question

3- A binary system of species 1 and 2 consists of vapor and liquid phases in equilibrium at temperature T, for which put = 1.24 bar ; Psat = 0.89 bar Assuming the validity of Modified Raoult's Law, a) For what range of values of the overall mole fraction zi, can this two-phase system exist with a liquid mole fraction of x 0.65? b) What is the pressure P and vapor mole fraction y within this range? c) What are the pressure and composition of the azeotrope at temperature T? 1 of 1 Dashboard To Do Notifications Calendar Inbo

Explanation / Answer

a)

Given P1sat = 1.24 bar and P2sat = 0.89 bar

at x1 = 0.65 and x2 = 0.35

also given that ln  1 = 1.8 x22

ln 2= 1.8 x12

therefore : solving ln  1 = 1.8 (0.352) = 0.2205 ; 1 = 1.2466

solving ln  2 = 1.8 (0.652) = 0.7605 ; 1 = 2.139

Now as from modified raoults law : P = x11P1sat + x22 P2sat

solving for it : P = (0.65*1.2466*1.24)+(0.35*2.139*0.89)

P = 1.671 bar

and for y1 = (x11P1sat)/ P

= (0.65 *1.2466 *1.24 ) / (1.671 ) = 0.601

that is for the values of overall molefraction (0.601 < Z1< 0.65)

b) and the pressure P = 1.671 bar and y1 = 0.601
