Question

500 From equation (2) from the introduction section, it is not possible to directly determine the molar mass of the unknown metals, because we do not know either MM or n. However, since m, Q, and F, are known, we can determine the ratio MM/n for each experiment run by rearranging the equation. The units for this ratio will be the same as for MM, g/mol. For each run, the mass of metal plated is the difference in the mass of the basket before and after the plating experiment. Use the average m value for the two runs in your calculations Calculate and enter below the MM/n ratios obtained from each plating experiment. MM/n ratio for Zn solution

Explanation / Answer

We have equation

Q= moles × n × F

moles = weight in grams / molar mass

Now equation become

Q= (weight/ MM) × n × F

Or we can write the above equation

MM/n = weight × F/ Q

Weight = 37.25 g, F = 96485 C/ mol, Q= 500 C

Substitute value in above equation

MM/n = 37.25 × 96485/500 = 7188.13g
