Question
28 The actual sodium chloride content in the sea water was 2.69%. If it had been assumed that the dissolved solid s) consisted only of sodium chloride, what percentage error would have resulted? [Caution: the answer is not 0.56%) The numbers included here are for a typical sea water sample. In addition to NaCl, typical sea water contains about 0.56% by mass of compounds (primarily chlorides) of magnesium, calcium and potassium. b· Could the dissolved solids have been isolated using either filtration or Explain your answer. c. salicylic obtained 3. Aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid) can be synthesized by reacting acetic anhydride with acid. Assume the reaction was run and 1.75 grams of a solid product was Recrystallization of the 1.75 g mixture yielded 1.50 g of aspirin. a. What was the percentage recovery of aspirin from the recrystallization? Why was recrystallization used for the purification of aspirin rather than filtration or evaporation? Explain your answer b. solutions of barium chloride and sodium sulfate results in the of a precipitate of barium sulfate. Sodium chloride is also formed but is soluble in water. Why would you use filtration to isolate the barium sulfate rather than evaporation or 4. The reaction of aqueous recrystallization? Explain your answer. answer to part 4:Well this is very simple we need to isolate barium sulphate from sodium chloride so evaporation will not work as it will evaporate only water leaving behing mixture of both products and recrystallization is last step which wont work without filtration.so we use filtration because it allows solvent carrying nacl to pass through the paper leaving barium sulphate on the filter paper.
answer to part 5:applications
1:sodium chloride-its table salt used in kitchen
2 calcium carbonate:its used in marbles
3 vanillin:its used in food and beverages as flavouring agent and also its added to soap and cosmetics to smell it better.
answer to part 3:1:percentage recovery=amnt of substance actually collected/amount supposed to be collected multiply by 100.....so according to this percent recovery of aspirin=(1.50/1.75)100=85.71%
2.Recrystallization is used to purify chemicals.when both impurities and compound are dissolved in a solvent either the compound or impurities are removed from solution leaving the other behind.so aspirin is insolublein acidic conditions so recrystallization will finally give pure aspirin.filtration or evaporation will not give desired product as impurities will be left behind.
