Question

Page 4 of 7 Name: 3. (30 pts total) Membrane Transport a. (10 points) Measured values of v, (initial velocity of transport) as a function of concentration were measured for the transport of benzene across a lipid bilayer: 32 58 93 11.6 benzene] (uM) 3 6 9 12 Plot this data on the graph below (make sure to label the axes!) and using this information predict the mechanism of benzene transport (facilitated or unfacilitated). Justily your reasoning for full credit! b. (5 points) If you answered unfacilitated above, what would the graph look like for facilitated transport? Conversely, if you answered facilitated above, what would the graph look like for unfacilitated transport?

Explanation / Answer

a.

The graph shows almost a linear relation. This shows faciliated benzene transport i.e. diffusion as the velocity increases. The relation is like benzene concentration is directly proportional to its velocity.

b. In this case, for unfaciliated transport, the benzene concentration is inversely proportional to its velocity.

In the following table, the values of velocity are calculated by taking inverse. For example, 1/3.2 = 0.3125

In the following graph, a more simplified i.e., a logarithmic trend is shown by a straight line.

Velocity benzene per second micro M 0.3125 3 0.172 6 0.10752 9 0.0862 12
