For each reagent listed below indicate if it can be used to separate the ioas. Type " the ions, give the fornuala of the precipitate. If it cannot, type "No" for yes or "N" for no. To determine the solubility of the precipitates formed on reaction of the Ca2+ and Ag+ ions ,we need to refer to their solubility product values ,ksp.
1) with reagent KOH,
Ag+ +KOH --->AgOH +K+ ,ksp=1.52*10^-8 (s) (insoluble in aqueous solvent ,so precipitates)
2AgOH-->Ag2O(s)+H2O (Ag2O is black/brown ppt)
Ca2+ +2KOH --->Ca(OH)2(aq) +2K+ ksp=5.5*10^-5 (comparatively more soluble than AgOH)
Ca2+ remains dissolved in the solvent ,and thus removed from precipitate of silver.but very low difference of solubility ,so complete precipitation of first salt not possible))
N (answer)
2) with reagent NaBr
Ag+ +NaBr--->AgBr(s) +Na+ (ksp of AgBr=7.7*10^-13,very low solubility ,cream color precpitate)
Ca2+(aq) + 2NaBr (aq)----->CaBr2 (aq)+2Na+ (ksp of CaBr2=3.2*10^-11,compratively soluble,but very low difference of solubility ,so complete precipitation of first salt not possible))
N(answer)
3)with K2CO3
Ag+ +CO32- ---->Ag2CO3 (ksp=8.10*10^-12)
Ca2+ CO32- ---->CaCO3(s) ksp=4.8*10^-9
Ag2CO3 should precipitate first ,but but very low difference of solubility,so complete precipitation of first salt not possible)
N(answer)
