Question
A horrific viral plague has beseeched human beings. It appears to have originated from a mutated flu strain in migratory geese that roost throughout the Northern hemisphere. The virus is 100% fatal to the genetically typical human being. Now, the question remains as to whether humans will endure as a species or be relegated into extinction with the dinosaur, dodo, and other animals that will never be again. If natural selection and Darwinian evolution is the accepted driving force for microevolution of a population, then what must be true in order for humans to survive? What would have to be true if LaMarckian evolution were the actual force governing population adaptation and survival?
Explanation / Answer
It is given that the viruis infection is fatal. But human survived and endure as a species in genetically typical human being.
If natural selection and Darwinian evolution is the accepted driving force for microevolution of a population, then the survival of human beings will be based upon the survival for the fittest. As only those human will survive which do not feed on geese as well as which can alter the mechanism and survive after being infected with this virus.
According to darwinism all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. So, the human will survive by inheriting variations in order to survive after being infected with virus and then will pass on the resistance to the next generation.
According to lamarck the force governing population adaptation and survival is the acquired characters of human which make him resistance towards the fatal virus. because lamarckism says, an organism can pass on characteristics that it acquired during its lifetime to its offspring (also known as heritability of acquired characteristics or soft inheritance). So in this way the human must have acquired and adapt the conditions to survive being suffreing to the virus but slowly it will adapt the condition to survive even after being infected with the virus. And these adapted characters are acquired by the next generation and in this way evolution of the population occurs.
