When these molecules, NaHSO4 and Na2CO3, are dissolved in solution, an equilibrium reaction takes place where they react with water to give up a proton to create an acidic solution, or take a proton to create a basic solution: NaHSO4 + H2O --> NaSO4- + H3O+ Na2CO3 + H2O --> NaHCO3 + Na+ + OH- In the first reaction, the acidic bisulfate ion releases a proton to water to create H3O+, making the solution acidic. In the second reaction, the carbonate anion takes a proton from water to make OH- and a basic solution. To write the first equation ionically: Na+ + HSO4- + H2O --> Na+ (SO4)2- + H3O+ To write a net ionic equation, you take away the common factors from each side: HSO4- + H2O --> (SO4)2- + H3O+ Hopefully you can now do the other one! 3 years ago
