1Q). Gastrulation is the development of cellular layers of the body. The “ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm” are the three layers that develop during gastrulation, and later these layers develop into various functional tissues.
The nervous system of humans develops from the specialized plate of cells that lie along the back of an embryo. Neurulation is an important step in the development of nervous system in the embryo, and this occurs after gastrulation. The differentiation of mesoderm into “notochord” is the first step in the development of nervous system. It is followed by the formation of neural plate (contains several folds) by thickening of the ectoderm present near the notochord.
The folds of neural tube move together and thus, the neural tube is formed. The neural tube develops into brain and spinal cord. The nerve cells and other cells of the nervous system develop from the neural crest cells (formed from raised edges of neural plate).
During the embryonic life, some basic structures of the brain enclosed in the rostral end of a tube like structure called “neural tube,” differentiate into various parts of the brain. By the fourth week of the embryo, an expansion of the anterior end of the neural tube (towards the forehead) occurs, forming the functional brain tissue.
