Question
A ballon inflated with helium gas will rise to the ceiling of aroom. however, after, a certain period of time, the balloon willdescend to the floor. Why does the balloon eventually descend? In the diffusion of HCl and NH3, does the first appearance ofwhite smoke indicate the first contact of the NH3 and HClmolecules? If the answer is no, how will it affect the calculatedvalue of the molecular weight of HCl when using GRAHAM's LAW?
In the diffusion of HCl and NH3, does the first appearance ofwhite smoke indicate the first contact of the NH3 and HClmolecules? If the answer is no, how will it affect the calculatedvalue of the molecular weight of HCl when using GRAHAM's LAW?
Explanation / Answer
For The first question with the balloon, it is important toknow that gases can diffuse in to their system.A Balloon will hainother gases from the environment. This will mean that thebaloon will gain mass and thus fall to the floor eventually untilthe baloon is fully saturated For the second question the white smoke indicates AmmoniumChloride which is the product of the mixture of HCl and NH3. SinceNH3 is lower weight than HCl it will diffuse faster than HCl, sothe formation of smoke will finally show the first contact betweenthese two gases. This smoke can affect the weight byinterfering with the mass colelcted of HCl.Related Questions
