Question

I need help on the following question:

F2O3 is added to Al. Potassium chlorate, sugar are added attop of this, followed by few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid tostart this very exothermic reaction. at the end aluminum hasreduced iron oxide to iron. The question asks, what are theoxidation states of iron and aliminum in the reactants andproducts? and what is the purpose of adding potassium chlorate, sugar, and concentrated sulfuric acid at the beginning of thisexperiment? what principle of kinetics does this illustrate?

Thank you for your help.

Explanation / Answer

The reaction between theFe2O3 & Al is a redoxreaction . Here in this Iron is reduced by adding ofAluminum.        The Chemical eqution is,                     Fe2O3 +2Al -------> 2Fe+Al2O3     Inthe above reaction Iron reduced from +3oxidation state to "0" Oxidation state . similarly Alalso oxidised from "0"     Oxidation state to +3 oxidationstate.             For this reactioninitially starting KClO3, suger , and few drops of concentrated H2SO4 are added.      This is the exothermic reaction.Forthat reason only KClO3 used as oxidising reagent , suger is takento produce the water molecules and finally H2SO4 used for Burningthe suger.
