Question

please please help!! I don't understand.

Example 3: An airplane pilot sets a compass course due west and maintains an air speed of 120 mi/hr. After flying for one-half hour, he finds himself over a town that is 75 miles west and 20 miles south of his starting point. (a) Find the magnitude and direction of the wind velocity. (b) If the wind velocity were 60 mi/hr due south from the north), in what direction should the pilot set his course in order to travel due west? (The plane still has the same air speed.) Explanation / Answer

vp = r / t

and vp = vp/air + v_wind

vp/air = - 120 i

(-120i + V_wind) = (-75i - 20 j)/ 0.5

- 120i + v_wind = -150i - 40j

v_wind = -30i - 40j

(A) magnitude = sqrt(30^2 + 40^2) = 40 mi/h

direction = tan^-1(40/30) = 53 deg South of west

(B) then 120 cos(theta) = 60

theta = 60 deg West of north
