ouestions in this section are to be answered by circling the correct multiple choice answer AND providing a short justification of your answer in the space after the problem Wednesday Homework Problem 9.1 The wire in the figure is straight ininitely long. and carries a current 1 to the right of the page A loop moves in the plane of the page with velocity parallel to the wire. Is a current induced in the loop? If a current is induced, what is the direction of the induced current o- Select One of the Following (a) There is no induced current (b) clockwise (c) counterclockwise Wednesday Homework Problem 9.2 The wire in the figure is straight, infinitely long and carries current to the right of the page. The loop in the figure is moving away from the wire in the direction drawn. Is a current induced in the loop? If a current is induced, what is the direction of the induced current in the loop? Select One of the Following (a) There is no induced current (b) clockwise (c) counterclockwise

Explanation / Answer

9.1) a) there is no induced current

Because, as the loop moves towards right there is no change magnetic flux through the loop. so, there will not be any induced emf. As a result there will not be any induced current.

9.2) b) clockwise

Because, as the loop moves downward the magnetic flux through the loop decreases.

so, emf is induced in such away that it tends to increases the magnetic flux through the loop.

so, induced current flows in the clockwise direction.
