Question
Consider the following errors that could be made when running TLC. Indicate what should be done to correct the error. (1pt each)
a. A two-component mixture containing 1-octene and 1,4-dimethylbenzene gave only one spot with an Rf value of 0.95. The solvent used was acetone.
b. A two-component mixture containing a dicarboxylic acid and tricarboxylic acid gave only one spot with an Rf value of 0.05. The solvent used was hexane.
c. When a TLC plate was developed, the solvent front ran off the top of the plate.

a. Since the acetone is a polar compound, so both the spot have moved simiultaneously. Here you have ti use low polar solvent to get the spot seperated. you may use 10 or 20% hexane in ethyl acetate.
b. this you cannot seperate it by TLc, as both compound will have nearly same polarity. You have to use some other technique to identify the compound.
c. Solvent front necer be run off the plate, because you have to calculate Rf or compare values. If it is so you cannot measure the distance of solvent front.
