Question
This is the mixture I am given: 50% fluorene, 40% o-toluic acid, 10% 1,4-dibromobenzene The goal is to isolate and purify the major components (50% and 40% components). The following reagents will be available: 1M NaOH, 6M NaOH, 1M HCl, 6M HCl, 1M NaHCO3, saturated sodium chloride, methyl t-butyl ether, ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, hexane, toluene, methylene chloride, and anhydrous sodium sulfate. Please outline in detail how you would separate, isolate and purify the mixture above with the given reagents
____________
please give a brief steps procedure
this lab is called separation and purification
Explanation / Answer
o-toluic acid separation is done by using NaOH and extracting the layer.
when you have separated the o-toluic acid you will have another mixture containing the leftover, it should look yellow, dry this mixture with anhydrous sodium sulfate, after it is dry remove the dryed liquid, evaporate using a hot bath, or air through the mixture, you will get 1,4 dibromobenzene, that is why it is yellow. As for the fluoride, my bet would be to add CaOH2 the fluoride bonds with calcium and CaF2 is insoluble. Place in ice bath and filter.
