Explanation / Answer

Skeletal muscles come in pairs as they stretch in one direction only. For example to bend a joint; one muscle contracts in the pair and its counterpart pulls the joint back to its original position by contracting in the opposite direction. For this reason, muscles always come in pairs as the same muscle cannot work in opposite directions.
