Question

In the last step of the copper cycle, excess zinc will react with acid according to the following unbalanced net ionic reaction. Add coefficients to balance the reaction (use lowest whole numbers, and use the normal convention of not adding "1") Zn(s) + 4H3O+(aq) + 2H2O(l) rightarrow [Zn(H2O)6]2+(aq) + H2(g) A student begins with 9.2 mL of a 0.17 M Cu(NO3)2 solution and performs copper cycle lab. She recovers 0.076 grams of copper metal. What is the theoretical yield of copper in grams? What is the actual yield of copper in grams? What is the percent yield of copper? Categroize each action below as increasing or decreasing the calculated value of the percent yield for copper collected at the end of a copper cycle experiment.

Explanation / Answer

Volume = 9.2mL = 9.2 * 10^-3L

molar conc. = 0.17M

no. of moles = molar conc. * volume(in litre)

no. of moles= 0.17M * 9.2 * 10^-3 L = 1.564*10^-3 mole.

Since 1mole of Cu(NO3)2 produces 1mole of Cu.

Therefore 1.564*10^-3 mole of Cu(NO3)2 produces 1.564*10^-3 mole of Cu.

Reacting mass = no. of moles * molar mass of Cu.

= 1.564*10^-3 mole * 63.5gmole^-1 = 0.099g

therefore the theoritical yield is 0.099g

actual yield is given as 0.076g

percent yield = 0.076*100/0.099 = 76.77 %
