Determine the moles of solute particles in 1.0 kg of a 3.0 m Ca(NO3)2 solution. 3.0 moles 18 moles 6.0 moles 9.0 moles 27 mole                 A. 3.0 moles                 B. 18 moles                 C. 6.0 moles
          D. 9.0 moles                 E. 27 mole

Explanation / Answer

The answer is: D. 9.0 moles

Moles of Ca(NO3)2 = molality x mass of solvent

= 3.0 x 1.0 = 3.0 mol

Ca(NO3)2 => Ca2+ + 2 NO3-

=> 1 mole of Ca(NO3)2 gives 3 moles of solute particles (1 Ca2+ and 2 NO3-)

Moles of solute particles = 3 x moles of Ca(NO3)2

= 3 x 3.0 = 9.0 mol
