Question

While HPV is certainly not the only STD circulating in the United States, it is the most common. A short time ago a vaccine was released to help combat the effects of HPV. Write a statement on the characteristics of HPV, how it is spread, and the effects of HPV on the body. Then, write some additional information in a persuasive passage advising a young male AND a young female on whether or not they should receive the vaccine to prevent HPV infection. Think about and include persuasion that might be different between the male and the female you are advising. Here are a few articles to get you started but you certainly are encouraged to do additional research. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/11/141112083843.htm -- Spreading of cancer causing HPV http://acsh.org/2014/11/hpv-vaccination-rates-increase-cervical-cancer-rates-decrease-study-finds/ HPV Vaccines and Cervical Cancer Rates http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/stdfact-hpv.htm HPV Information from CDC.

Explanation / Answer

HPV has turned out to be the most commonly occurring se-xually transmitted disease, and may further lead to a number of cancers such as cer-vical, va-ginal, vu-lvar pen-ile, ana-l etc. The HPV is a oral human papilloma virus that is more commonly found amongst males who have had female partners with gen-ital or oral infection , which suggests that the transmission of this disease is either via oral-oral routes or via oral-gen-ital routes.

- HPV can be spread by direct sustained skin - to - skin contact with the va-Gina or an-al inter-course being the prime transmission

- can also be spread from the mother to the baby at the time of pregnancy

The HPV does not show symptoms in majority of the cases and get resolved in a short duration, whereas in some cases they can be seen in the form warts or precancerous lesions.

Symptoms of HPV on body

Different HPV cause different types of symptoms on the body, some of the common do which are :

- in the form of skin warts or cutaneous infection.

- plantar warts found in the soles of feet

- periungal warts or subungal warts around the fingernail or cuticle.

- flat warts on arms, face or forehead

- Gen-ital warts , in the case of se-xually transmitted HPV or sometimes may also be asymptomatic.

To prevent HPV infections, it is very important for the people to be vaccinated and has to be done before the infection can occur. These vaccines are advised to be taken between the age of nine to thirteen . Warts can also be removed by freezing.

Vaccines for HPV types available are for Gardasil, Cer-varix and Gardasil 9, that prevent against HPV 16 and 18. If the vaccine is taken after a person is infected, it would produce effects close to nil. Thus, it has been recommended by the WHO, to be taken before a person is exposed to the HPV during se-x. It is important to be vaccinated because HPV has been a cause for many types of cancers and a person can be affected by cancer after an HPV infection if not properly treated. This is more important to women as there are high chances of cer-vical cancers.
