Question

This experiment was to extract caffeine from tea leaves. Here is the procedure.

To 10mg of caffeine (I extracted this caffeine from tea bags) add 7.5 mg of salicylic acid and .5 mL of dichloromethane. Heat to boil and add petroleum ether dropwise until the mixture turnes cloudy. Cool to room temp and remove solvent which leaves the crystals.

Ok here is what I used in Lab.

Caffiene Tea Bags Used = 5 bags (55 mg caffeine per bag)

Salicylic Acid Used = 0.0079

Weight of Caffiene Salicylate (Crude Weight) = 0.1021g

Weight of Pure Caffeine = 0.0821

Dichloromethane - .5ml (I dont know if this matters)

Ok this is the data that I have and I need to find the percen yeild. I know the theoretical yield and the limiting reagent must be found but I dont know how. I have been working on this and do not get it. Please give a me detailed description explaing step by step.

Explanation / Answer

just write the reaction of the three comppumnds and balance them .

after this you have to know the molecular wts of the individuals and find the moles of the respective one .

than you can proceed by dividing them by their individual stoichiometric coefficients . on doing this you you get a particular valkues for each compound . now the compound having the lowest value is the limiting reagent .
