Question
We are using Aspirin, Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen and Caffeine.
Mobile phase 1: 95% ethyl acetate and 5% acetic acid
Mobile phase 2: 100% ethyl acetate
Mobile phase 3: 50% ethyl acetate and 50% hexane
Question 1) Comment on the differences between the two plates developed in mobile phase 1 and
mobile phase 2. Explain the chemical reason for these differences and hence why acetic acid
has been added to mobile phase 1.
Question 2) Comment on the differences between the two plates developed in mobile phase 1 and
mobile phase 3. Explain the chemical reason for these differences.
Question 3) Which mobile phase is the most appropriate for this experiment? Explain your reasoning.
Explanation / Answer
1. mobile phase 1 is more polar compare to mobile phase 2 . acetic acid dipolemoment is high compare to ethylacetate. Acetic acid using as a solvent and more polar solvent compare to ethylacetate. Asipirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and caffeine is soluble in acetic acid only not in ethylacetate.
2.mobile phase 2 is more polar compare to mobile phase 2. ethyl acetate dipolemoment is high compare to hexane.
3.mobile phase 1 is good for this compounds.Asipirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and caffeine is soluble in acetic acid only not in ethylacetate
