Question

Which of the following molecules would a flame ionization detector (FID) be sensitive to after separation on a gas chromatography column?

methylcyclopentane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, propane, n-pentane

I thought FID responds to most hydrocarbons and is insensitive to nonhydrocarbons such as H2, He, N2, O2, CO, CO2, H2O, NH3, H2S, and SiF4. So I selected carbon monoxide, nitrogen monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and oxygen. But the it wasn't the answer. Why am I wrong?

Explanation / Answer

you selected opposite answer.

Propane, n-pentane, and methylcyclopentane should be the answer.
