Question
1. (computational software recommended for this problem) A distillation process has been set up to separate an ethane-ethylene mixture as shown in the below diagram. The product stream will consist of 98 mol% ethylene, and 97 mol% of ethylene in the feed is recovered in this product stream. The feed, 1000 kmol/hr of 35 mol% ethylene, enters the preheater as a subcooled liquid (-73oC, 250 psia). The feed stream does not mix with the bottoms stream in the preheater; only heat is exchanged. The feed experiences a 12oC rise in temperature before entering the distillation column. An optimum reflux ratio of 6.1 kmol reflux/kmol product is used. Operating pressure in the distillation column will be 250 psia and assume that the overall column is adiabatic. Hint!!: The vapor and liquid streams leaving the distillation column can be used to solve for the temperature of these streams. Assume ideal solution behavior for the ethane/ethylene mixture.
a. Draw a process flow diagram and explicitly label all unknowns.
b. Solve the mass balance around the system as completely as possible without setting up energy balances.
c. Determine the temperatures of the bottoms and overhead streams.
d. Using an energy balance around the distillation column, complete the material balance for ethane/ethylene. Neglect the enthalpy changes due to pressure changes of incompressible fluids. Assume that the empirical relations for heat capacity of the ethane/ethylene vapor holds for temperatures below 0oC.
e. Determine the tons of cooling required for the condenser operation (1 ton cooling = -12000 Btu/h).
f. Determine the mass flow rate of 2.2 bar saturated steam required in the reboiler.
g. Determine the temperature of the bottoms as it leaves the preheater.

Hey did you ever get solution to this problem?
I am willing to give points for I have same problem on Sapling.
Thanks
