Question

I'm just looking for some verification of labs results concerning solubility of certain compounds with water (H2O) and ethanol (C2H6O). My professor only wants "yes" or "no" answers as to whether they are soluble, so I am guessing the ones that were only slightly soluble should be counted as a "no."

Sucrose (C12H22O11): With Water (yes) With Ethanol (No)

Sodium Chloride (NaCl):With Water (yes) With Ethanol (No)

Stearic Acid (C18H36O2):With Water (No) With Ethanol (No)

Corn Starch (C6H10O5):With Water (No) With Ethanol (No)

Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3):With Water (Yes) With Ethanol (No)

- If I am wrong with any of my conclusions, can you please explain why my results didn't reflect what they should have. I know with the water, I used warm water, but I did not use a "warm water bath" for ethanol.

Explanation / Answer

Sucrose is soluble in water and insoluble in pure ethanol

NaCl is soluble in water (360g per kg water) and soluble in ethanol (0.65g per kg ethanol)

Stearic acid is pretty much insoluble in both of these: (0.000002g per kg water) and (0.164g per kg ethanol)

Corn Starch is insoluble

Sodium Bicarbonate is soluble in water and insoluble in ethanol

I would say that you might not have seen the sodium chloride reaction taking place because it would of been very slow if you had not used a lot of ethanol. Also, if your professor is only looking for yes or no, then slightly soluble is generally counted as insoluble in standard conditions
