Question
I am working on a chemical bond lab and I need a little assistance on melting points
We are given...
Sucrose (C12H22O11)
Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
Stearic Acid (C18H10O6)
Corn Starch (C8H106)
Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3)
- We are supposed to predict, and rank from 1-5 ("1" being the lowest melting point) the above mentioned chemical bonds. I know I can just "Google" their melting points, but I want to understand how the melting points are calculated. I already did the experiment and know that stearic acid melted the fast, and then sucrose, but the others don't have a melting point so I am clueless on how to rank these!
Explanation / Answer
friend i can say you that in case of organic compounds we can esily compare the boiling points just by simpplt calculating the molecular wts of the compounds the one with thye higher ml . wt has a higher boiling oint in comparison to the lower one .
by this we can easily compare the boiling points of organic compounds
and for NaCl and Na HCO3 we have to see whether the molecule is polar or we can see the dipole moment of the compounds and arrange them acc to their boiling points or we can smply calculate the lattice energy which is inversely proportional to the sizes of the cation + the anion
and i think that going by the concept of lattice energy is the best one in cale of ionic compounds
so in case of organic compounds the order is stearic > sucrose > corn > Nacl > NaHCO3
