Question

                    A batch of sodium hydroxide was found to contain sodium chloirde as an impuity. determin the amount of impuruty. A 1.00 g sample was analyzed and found to                     require 49.90ml of 0.466M HCl for neutralization. What is the percent of NaCl in this sample?

                    Explain any equations and steps

                                     answer is 7.0% NaCl.

all steps must be shown and answered and use dimesional analysis

Explanation / Answer

NaOH + HCl -----> NACl + H20

moles of Hcl = 0.466 x 49.90 /1000 = 0.0232534

from the reaction

moles of NaOH = moles of Hcl reacted

So moles of NaOh = 0.0232534

mass of NaOh = mass x M.W

mass of NaOh = 0.0232534 x 40

mass of NaOH = 0.93 g

Mass of NaCl = 1-0.93

mass of NaCl =0.07

% of NaCl =( 0.07 / 1 ) x 100

% of NaCl = 7
