Question
To start to address the above question (the overarching question), we need to get an idea of how big the earth really is! So, let's first address a very simple question: If everyone in the world today were given one square meter of space to stand on, could the entire population of the world fit inside the United States? inside Texas? Massachusetts? Rhode Island? Working within your groups, you first need to decide what data/information you will need to answer this very simple question. Make sure that you work out all the details so that you can then divide up the work of searching for the data/information on the Internet. After searching out the necessary data, work as a group to run through the calculations and come to conclusions: If everyone in the world today were given one square meter of space to stand on, could the entire population of the world fit inside the United States? inside Texas? Massachusetts? Rhode Island?Explanation / Answer
The human population is 7.3 billion.
If everyone were to be given 1 square meter space to stand on, the entire population would occupy 7.3bil x1 = 7.3 billion square meters.
If we convert the above value to sq. km we have: 7.3 x109/106= 7.3x103=7300sq.km
The total area of:
Texas: 695,662 sq.km
Massachusetts:27336 sq. km
Rhode Island: 3140 sq.km
United States of America: 9.857 sq. km
Therefore, the entire population of the world can be fit inside Texas and Masachusetts but not Rhode Island.
