Question
The chemical DDT is an extremely effective pesticide that kills insects. Unfortunately, DDT spread throughout the environment (including into humans: yeah!) after its use, so it was everywhere. It hasn't been used in the United States for over 40 years, as it also killed humans and other organisms (most famously bald eagles) too. Compare how much DDT from pesticides you would expect to find in river water vs. glaciers, and why? Again, assume that DDT has the same residence time as the water in each system (that is, it stays in rivers as long as water does, and same for glaciers). Looking at the image below showing the average annual precipitation in the U.S. from 1961-1990 (the original came from http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/pcpn/us_precip.gif). Describe one area of the country with higher than average precipitation (one of the shades of blue) and explain why this higher average annual precipitation occurs using one of the three causes (convection, frontal, orographic) of precipitation discussed in class.Explanation / Answer
1. MELTING GLACIER RELEASE THE STORED DDT WHICH HAVING MORE DDT THAN RIVER
THE RESIDENCE TIME FOR DDT IS LESS
2.CONVECTIONAL RAIN
SUN HEAT AIR AND LAND
WARM AIR RAISE AND COOLS AND CONDENSE FORM CLOUDS
RAIN OCCURS
