EXERCISE 212 Long-Term Movement of the Pacific Plate Course: Section: Date: northern Pacifi Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain was once directly above the hot spot but is now in the active for a long thousands of kilometers away (see the figure below) Seamount ages show that the hot spot hasbeen andreveal directionand rate at which the Pacific Plate has moved. What evidence is there that the Pacific Pate Hasnotahwaysmowedinthe same direction? (b) How many years ago did the Pacific Plate change direction? Explain your reasoning Physiography of the Pacific ocean floor, showingages ofvolcanoesinthe Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain. 50 CHAPTER 2 THE wtay TME EAnTH utoniocExplanation / Answer
a) Presence of the Hawaiian island chain is the best example for the movement of the Pacific Plate over the Hawaiian hot-spot, the shape of the island chain indicates the motion of the Pacific Plate have change it’s motion in the geological time some way back in the 43 million year ago and it took more westerly from its earlier northerly direction. The reason for this is not well known, but it’s being correlated with the collision of the Indian plate with that of the Asian plate.
b) The Pacific Plate have change its direction at around 43 million year ago, and the evidence comes from the abrupt change in the island paten, earlier it was in the northerly direction and later it change towards the westerly direction the reason beyond this change is not well known.
c) Map is not readable
d) Meiji Seamount was naked after the Emperor Meiji, 122nd Emperor of Japan and it is the oldest sea mount in the Hawaiian sea mount chain and it’s 82 million year older. The exact distance between the Hawaiian hot spot and the Meiji sea mount is not yet known but it’s estimated to be 2600 kilometers away from each other and it has moved with an average of 3 to 3.5 inches per year.
e) As map is unreadable so not able to get the proper solution for this question too.
f) Meiji Seamount have moved at an constant rate there was no variation in it’s speed, It’ll be going to take some million of years from now to get thus seamount completely distructed as once it enter into the trench part.
g) In present time the Pacific plate is moving in the westerly direction, and the reason for this direction movement is not well known.
