What is It about most sedimentary rocks that makes them unsuitable for radioactive dating? Why do we use Ar^40 in preference to Co^kj in K^a0 dating? what advantages does it have? Any disadvantages ? Recall the mineral composition of granite (Lab 4). Of the most common minerals found in granite which would be most suitable for K^ad dating? (There may be more than 1.) Radiometric dating of meteorites places the age of Earth at 4.54 billion years (4.54 times 10^s years). In contrast the oldest Earth rocks found so far (gneisses from the Northwest Territories of Canada) date to 4.03 times 10^9 years. What reasons can you think of to explain this 500 million year age discrepancy?

1) actually sedimentary rocks are formed by the disentigrated and decomposed products of pre existing rocks like igneous and metamorphic rocks . so they are just accumulations of different rock particles which are derived from different rocks. so that if we conduct a radiometric dating of thi sedimentary rock which is made by different rock products , we can only find the age of those particles only not the age of sedimentary rock.

so they are not suitable for radiometric datings
