The center’s scientists track earthquake activity worldwide and provide up to the minute information on seismic activity. Explanation / Answer

Answer 1: The website is designed as a part of “Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program” with an aim to provide detailed and up to date information of earthquake event to prevent damages caused to life, property due to occurrence of earthquake.

Answer 2: The occurrence of many Earthquakes at certain places is due to the fact that earthquakes are found to occur at active plate margins i.e at the margin of plates related with subduction zone.

Answer 3: The majority of earthquakes which lies along Japan and its neighborhood. These lie across four major plates which are as mentioned hereunder:

Answer 4: The largest most recent earthquake has been registered from 31 Km SW of Pangyan, Philippines. The coordinates was 5.505°N 125.072°E.

The magnitude of earthquake was 6.9 and it was located at a depth of 26 Km.

There were no major ecological or biological effects of this event and this was not linked to any tsunami or other like events. The exposure to population in thousands has been shown in the enclosed graph.
