Question
EARTHQUAKES The USGS Earthquake center (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/) is an excellent source of earthquake information. The center’s scientists track earthquake activity worldwide and provide up to the minute information on seismic activity. Copy and paste the following URL into your internet browser. http://www.earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ Look at the USA map of earthquakes. You may also find it interesting to click on the animation to see up to date earthquake activity in the US. Answer the following questions in the submission box and submit when done. Be sure to identify each question.
1) STATE the concept behind the website. (2 pt.) E
2) ELABORATE on the concept: explain fully why certain areas (locations) have a much higher number of earthquakes than others. (2 pt.) E
3) EXEMPLIFY the concept: locate, name, and describe the area of greatest concentration of earthquakes. (3 pt.) - I
4) Illustrate the concept: Using graphs, pictures, and/or tables, and text, describe the largest most recent earthquake; provide information on its magnitude, depth, and ecological & biological impacts to the region. (Do this by finding the World Lists of earthquakes on the same webpage and clicking on Magnitude 5+.) (3 pt.)
Explanation / Answer
The conceptof the website is provide all the information on earthquakes and also provide information immediately after earthquake
USGS web site is very much useful for scientists and interested people to have up to date knowledge
The reason for certain areas having higher number of earthquakes is due to Plae-Tectonic movements. Particularly along the west coast of USA more earth quakes are observed.
It is due to Pacific plate colliding with American Plate and uplifting it. These activities are very frequent along west coast of California.
Similarly Himalayan plate colliding with Chinese plate and uplifting it. Due to this the orogeny of Great Himalayas are evolved.
So wherever tectonic movements are taking place that is intensive seismic zone and having chances of getting frequent earth quacks
West coast of USA falls under high seismic zone. Many earthquakes were recorded here. Some of them are very powerful and many of them are minor. These earth quakes are occurring due continental plate movement.
The latest earth quake recorded at 6.9 M Intensity in Kandrian, Papua New Guinea occurred on 17.10 2016 at 14.58 hours reported by USGS earthquake warning centre. There were no tsunami flood effect. Not much damage is reported.
Generally the earthquakes above 7.0 magnitude are very intensive cause massive destructions. Roads and buildings will be damaged. Many damages due to collapse of buildings occur sometimes the death toll be very high.
In 2015, a massive earthquake was occurred in Nepal which caused collapse many buildings and death of thousands of people.
About 2,50,000 buildings were damaged and killed around 6,300 people.
The earthquakes damages occur in man made structures. Japan and Indonesia built earthquake resistant buildings so that they minimised losses due building collapses and death toll.
