Question
Due to the fact our Earth spins, the Coriolis Effect gives weird responses to wind fields in pressure fields. By now you should be familiar with contour maps. In a previous homework, the contours were constant heights above sea level. Here the contours represent constant pressures (or isobars). The areas denoted by the Capital H represent High Pressure areas and the areas denoted by the capital L represent Low Pressure areas. If our Earth had no spin, the wind field from Albany, NY to Dallas, TX would be almost a straight line since high pressure always wants to flow directly to low pressure. This is not the case on our Earth. Read the section in Chapter 8 related to the Coriolis Effect to determine how winds would move.
For each of the following cities, fill in which direction the winds are blowing (ie. to the North, to the East, etc.) (9 pts).
Seattle, WA _____________________ (with justification, please)
Bismarck, ND ___________________ (with justification, please)
Albany, NY ____________________ (with justification, please)
Dallas, TX ______________________ (with justification, please)
Seattle, Washingtan Bismarck, ND ND ND Albany. NY Dallas' Lexas THE WEATHER CHANNELExplanation / Answer
answer- as we all konws as very well that corolis force have major influence in the movement of air masses and wind in boths hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere wind deflect in the right direction , and in the left direction in the southern hemisphere. In the weather map of united state there is isobar map is showing where there region of high and low pressure is illustrated. high pressure region shows clear weather and on other side low pressure region represents the presence of atmospheric disturbance.
now the direction of wind and atmoshperic condition of above 4 cities are following
1- Seattle, WA- there the wind direction will be South west toward the region of Low presures region which situted in the south direction of Seattle. and we all knows wind more from the region from high pressure region which shows clear weather to the region of region of low pressure. In the low pressure region in the south of Seattle charactersize by the presence of heavy precipitation as we can see in the image due to convergence of wind from the north side.
2- Bismarck, ND- there wind direction will be south . The region lies top of low pressure region. or top of cyclone. By the analysis of map is found that cold wind blowing from bismarck towards the south direcion and meets with warm wind at the region of low pressure region and generate front. there is formation of polar air depression zone.
3- Albany, NY- there wind moves in North east direction. region lies in high pressure region so the wind will move to to the low pressure region situted at the north east direction of the Albany.
4- Dallas, texas- there wind moves in North east direction. In this region cold air front that comes from the North west direction meets the warms air flowing from the atlantic ocean in the south. these cold and warms front unites and form a front. and this low pressure region is characterize by the presence of cyclone.
