HazardCity - Tsunami Assessment

Part F - Tsunamis in the Atlantic Ocean

Why hasn't the east coast of the United States been affected by tsunamis in recorded history?

(D) The east coast is prone to storm surges and tsunamis and storm surges cannot occur in the same areas.

Part H - Elevation Change and Tsunamis

The elevation of Ocean Village has been determined in order to predict the potential risk to tsunamis, but why might this elevation not be accurate after a tsunami? (this is the location map http://media.pearsoncmg.com/ph/esm/esm_hazardcity_4_standalone/assignment06/location_map.htm )

(A) The topography of the east coast does not allow tsunamis to reach land. (B) Tsunamis are infrequent and therefore just have not been recorded in that area yet. (C) The east coast does not have a tectonically active zone offshore to generate tsunamis.

(D) The east coast is prone to storm surges and tsunamis and storm surges cannot occur in the same areas.

Part H - Elevation Change and Tsunamis

The elevation of Ocean Village has been determined in order to predict the potential risk to tsunamis, but why might this elevation not be accurate after a tsunami? (this is the location map http://media.pearsoncmg.com/ph/esm/esm_hazardcity_4_standalone/assignment06/location_map.htm )

(A) Since Ocean Village is located above a subduction zone, the elevation of the land both before and after a tsunami will be the same. (B) Subduction causes a buildup of the land surface and land elevation will therefore rise. Fewer areas may be affected by a tsunami. (C) Ocean Village could be located above a subduction zone. After strain is released at a subduction zone, land elevation lowers. Therefore, more areas may be affected by a tsunami. (D) The tsunami waves will erode the coast, causing elevations to lower. More areas may be affected by a tsunami.

Explanation / Answer

Part F : (C) The east coast does not have a tectonically active zone offshore to generate tsunamis. Because North American plate is diverged from midoceanic ridge and has been falulting with cocs plate. So the east coast is tectonically stable.

Part H : (C) Ocean Village could be located above a subduction zone. After strain is released at a subduction zone, land elevation lowers. Therefore, more areas may be affected by a tsunami.
