Question

Hazard City: Tsunami/Storm Surge Assessment (pt. 1)

Part A - Tsunami Risk

Ocean Village is built directly on the coast facing the open ocean. The village council has asked you to do a preliminary risk assessment of the village for tsunamis of various run-up elevations. What is the minimum tsunami run-up elevation that poses a risk to each site? Use the map provided below to answer this question by placing each site in the appropriate bin for run-up elevation.

Note that the elevation contours are spaced 5 feet apart and are lines of constant elevation. You will need to compare elevation of the various sites to the run-up elevation to determine risk.

Question for Part A is below - please read: it is not possible to select a site more than once. it can only be used once (I hope this makes sense)

Explanation / Answer

*Sites in which the water run-up elevation is 10 feet

Answer: Site 4 and site 1

*Sites in which the water run up elevation is 20 feet:

Answer: site 5

Here site 5 contour elevation is 20 feet

Here you can observe that at the following sites, there is the minimum and contour elevation above 20 feet.

*Sites in which the water run-up elevation is 30 feet:

Answer: site 3

No risk for this site

Answer: site2

Site 2 has an elevation more than 30 feet contour so I may not effected by water run up.
