Write a short cause-effect essay to explain an environmental problem affecting the area where you live. Checklist Use the following checklist to help you complete this essay. The first paragraph should be an introduction in which you define the environmental problem you are writing about. Make sure you write an effective thesis statement. Limit your thesis so that you can write about it in no more than four paragraphs. Use a cause-and-effect style to develop the body paragraphs. Connect causes and effects clearly and logically. Ensure that all points are connected to the topic sentence. Provide an appropriate amount of information. Use appropriate transitions and referents to link the sentences and ideas. The final paragraph should be a conclusion. You need to show that you have made the cause-effect link you detailed in the introduction. Edit your writing for mechanical and grammatical errors. Provide a list of references if you use reference or resource materials.

Explanation / Answer

In India, river pollution is a major concern. The three river system of northern part of India namely Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus are highly polluted.This river water is used for various purposes like irrigation, drinking and other industrial purposes. The area near these rivers is densely populated. The pollution is increasing in these rivers due to discharge of pollutants without prior treatment. This water pollution is harmful to the aquatic animals and the ecosystems as well for the humans.

There are various causes of water pollution in these rivers namely overexploitation of these water resources due to rapid urbanisation, agricultural runoff, discharging of sewage waste from households without their prior treatment, dumping of solid waste like plastic bottle, cans into the river water, industrial wastes which contains harmful chemicals like asbestos, petrochemical, lead, mercury etc which badly affect the quality of the water. Some religious practices like cremation of dead bodies into the river, putting idols of gods or goddesses into the water also promotes water pollution. All these practices makes the water highly polluted and unsafe for drinking and other purposes like irrigation.

To prevent the pollution it is necessary to ban such practices which degrades the quality of water. Also cleaning of river should be encouraged and the people should be made aware of the river pollution. The industrial effluents should be treated in the treatment plants before discharging their waste waters into the rivers. The ozone waste water treatment should be employed to clean the water. There should be strict rules regarding the pollution of water and guilty should be punished for polluting the river water.
