Question
Suppose you were given a mixture of iodine, potassium chloride and water to separate. Using the information gather for these and similar compounds in this experiment, and using what you know about the properties of these materials from other contexts, outline a procedure that could be used to do a quantitative separation of these three materials. Your procedure should be specific enough, that if followed, someone could determine the quantity of each of the three materials present in the mixture.
Explanation / Answer
Iodine is more volatile component among Iodine, water and potassium chloride. It sublime most rapidly. Thus iodine can be separated from the mixture by the process of sublimation.
After that we have potassium chloride and water left in the mixture.Potassium chloride can be easily separated from water by the process of evaporation. The water is allowed to vapourise by heating the mixture and the potassium chloride is left behind in the container. the water is then collected in another container where it is condensed and recoverd.
Thus we can separate the mixtures of iodine, water and potassium chloride by involving two processes namely Sublimation and Evaporation.
