Question

Write a balanced net ionic equation for each of the following aqueous metathesis reactions. (Be sure to include all states, aq, s, l or g) Refer to the example in the introduction of this experiment and the section on ionic equations in your textbook for assistance. Classify each reaction as a neutralization, precipitation, or gas-- forming reaction. a. Hydrobromic acid and cesium hydroxide

Classification: __________________________

b. Sulfuric acid and sodium carbonate

Classification: __________________________

c. Cadmium chloride and sodium sulfide

Explanation / Answer

Hi

A) Neutralization Reaction

2HBr(aq) + Ca(OH)2(aq) --> CaBr2(aq) + 2HOH(l) ....... molecular equation
2H+ + 2Br- + Ca2+ + 2OH- --> Ca2+ + 2Br- + 2HOH(l).. ionic equation
H+ + OH- --> HOH(l) ................................ ..................... net ionic equation

B) Gas-Forming Reaction

Molecular Equation : Na2CO3(aq) + H2SO4(aq) --- > Na2SO4(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)

Ionic Equation : 2 Na^+(aq) + CO3^2-(aq) + 2 H^+(aq) + SO4^2-(aq) --- > 2 Na^+(aq) + SO4^2-(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
2 Na^+(aq) and SO4^2-(aq) appear on both sides of equation and can be cancelled out

Net Ionic Equation : CO3^2-(aq) + 2 H^+(aq) --- > H2O(l) + CO2(g)

C) Precipitation Reaction

Adding colorless sodium sulfide to colorless cadmium(II) chloride produces a yellow precipitate of cds (cadmium sulphide)
CdCl2(aq) + Na2S(aq) --> CdS(s) + 2 NaCl(aq)
net ionic equation should be:
cd(2+) + 2cl(-) + 2na(+) +s(2-) ------> 2na(+) + 2cl(-)
