You will be assigned a form of nitrogen and the concentration of a standard solution for your form of nitrogen. It is imperative that you prepare and complete the table in this prefab assignment before you come to the lab. For the assigned nitrogen ion under study prepare a table that will contain 8 standard dilutions from a standard solution. Remember that for dilutions we can use M1V1 = M2V2. Your TA needs to review and approve your calculations prior to performing the experiment. The Method Table provides the concentration ranges for each form of nitrogen. Follow the suggestions below. Your range of concentration values should be from the zero to a little above the highest value. Make sure that you have sufficient values at the lower end of the range. The highest detection level is a guide of where your stock standard should be. If the available standard for your nitrogen ions is too high, you might have to make a new diluted standard as your starting solution. For example a 1000 ppm nitrate standard is too concentrated to use directly in your calculations. A more desirable concentration for your range is 50 ppm. In this case you will need to prepare the 50 ppm solution from the 1000 ppm standard. In this case you will use the 50 ppm for your table calculations.
