Question

So I did a lab on the titration of acetic acid in vinegar where we put 10 mL of NaOH in the titrator and 5 mL vinegar in the beaker underneath the titrator mixed with 2 drops of pheno as the pH indicator and now I have to answer this question.

1. A student did not read the directions to the experiment properly and mixed up where to place the NaOH solution and the vinegar. He put the vinegar in the titrator and the measured amount of NaOH in the beaker. He then added a drop of the phenolphthalein to the solution in the beaker. Does the student need to empty out all of the solutions and start over again or can he go ahead and run the titration? If he runs the titration using the solutions as given above, what should he expect to see happen for results?

Explanation / Answer

The final point with the indicator is going to be difficult to distinguish, because the color change is pink to transparent and it is not easy to determinate, so the lecture and the end of the titration is not going to be very proper and the results not going to be good. The best thing is to try to start over again.
